From One Conversation to a Wave of Compassion: How Our Community United for Homeless Veterans

It all began with a chance meeting. When Nicole Von Elm, Director of Admissions, Waterview/Salem Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare, a dedicated colleague from our team, met the Co-Executive Director of the U.S. Patriot Fund, John Baglivi, at an outside event, she learned something that stopped her in her tracks: many homeless veterans can’t even get a meal unless they have socks on their feet. That simple, heartbreaking fact sparked an idea—and a movement.

Nicole brought the story back to the office, and what happened next was nothing short of extraordinary. The employees of Waterview Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Salem Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare, and our sister facility Skyview Rehabilitation and Healthcare sprang into action, launching the Homeless Veterans Survival Bag Drive. The goal was simple yet profound: provide warmth, dignity, and hope to those who once served our country.

The response? Overwhelming. Socks poured in by the dozens—because our community understood that something as small as a pair of socks could mean the difference between hunger and nourishment for a veteran in need. Alongside socks came gloves, wool hats, hygiene items, and even solar-powered phone chargers, all packed into survival bags designed to help veterans weather the harsh realities of homelessness.

And the momentum didn’t stop there. Our local newspaper joined forces with us, helping spread the word throughout the surrounding communities. Their support amplified our reach and inspired even more donations, proving that when media and community unite, incredible things happen.

This initiative wasn’t just about donations; it was about restoring humanity. Every item carried a message: Your service is remembered. You are not forgotten.

As the holiday season reminds us of the power of giving, this story stands as a testament to what can happen when compassion meets action. From one conversation to hundreds of lives touched, our community proved that kindness can change the world—one pair of socks at a time.
